For more than 30 years, Dr. Hans Diehl's Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP) (formerly Coronary Health Improvement Project) has helped more than 80,000 people to rediscover their health by preventing, arresting, and reversing their diseases. The CHIP program is an engaging, highly entertaining 32-hour scientific journey into the causes and consequences of our present "state of health" in Western societies.

Piloted in communities throughout North America, and with results published in more than 35+ scientific and medical journals, CHIP is making a difference. CHIP will not only show you why we need to make better lifestyle choices but also how to stop the "good life" from killing us. CHIP establishes the principle of health as an absolute necessity rather than a trendy option. It is not natural to be obese and hypertensive, have high cholesterol and triglycerides, and to suffer from diabetes, constipation, heartburn, angina, and heart disease.

Payer Source Influence on Effectiveness of

Lifestyle Medicine Programs

"

Take-Away Points:

  • Participants that receive funding for the Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP) through a third-party source (scholarship or employer) experience similar reduction in chronic disease risk factors as those that pay out of pocket.

  • Poverty-stricken regions like Appalachia have a greater burden of chronic diseases; thus, it is advantageous to provide funding for those in financial need to attend lifestyle intervention programs.

  • With healthcare costs escalating and assistance for the poor decreasing, there is a need for accessible, cost-effective programs that produce sustained health benefits.

  • The results from this study suggest that participants, regardless of their socioeconomic status, could potentially benefit from CHIP.

When funded by an employer, CHIP demonstrated short-term improvements in select metabolic and cardiovascular biomarkers. Future studies will analyze these data to determine whether these findings translate into subsequent decreased employee absenteeism and reduced beneficiary health claims.
