Enjoying Our "Golden Years"

by Jody Perrecone

None of us look forward to getting older.  Declining health, becoming forgetful, having less mobility and energy, experiencing a hearing loss, and being lonely are all what we think of what might happen to us as we age.  Isn’t there an alternative?

The answer is a resounding yes!  We can live longer, healthier, more productive lives as we get older.  Be proactive.  By approaching health in a preventive rather than a reactive manner, we can prolong our wellness, both physically and mentally.  Our lifestyle has an enormous impact on the condition of our health.  By eating a healthy diet consisting of whole grains, beans, legumes, vegetables, and fruits and avoiding fats and processed foods, studies have shown we will reduce the risk of having type II diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, being overweight, and having high blood pressure. Our minds will be clearer and we will feel more alert.  Exercising on a regular basis keeps our body mobile and our mind sharp.  Stay optimistic.  Scientists have discovered the body’s immune mechanism is increased when people have a positive attitude. We can continue to do what gives us joy in life as we get older.

A diet of rich, refined foods and a lack of exercise can make us old before our time.  But with a healthy lifestyle, worthwhile goals, and a positive mental attitude, it is possible to enjoy life well into our “golden years.”
