Foods Can Help Fight Cancer

by Jody Perrecone

When Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine”  did he mean just continue eating and don’t bother going to the doctor?   No, that was not what he was suggesting. What Hippocrates may have been saying was whole foods have properties that can heal and help protect against disease.

None can be more true than cruciferous vegetables that include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, kale, and bok choy.

These incredible vegetables have cancer fighting properties.  Researchers have known this for years, but not until recently did they understand how they worked.  And what they have learned is truly amazing!

It turns out a compound found in cruciferous vegetables have a gene that stops cells from dividing uncontrollably, forming into tumors.  In about half of all cancers, this gene is damaged and looses its ability to stop this uncontrollable cell growth.

The compound found in the cruciferous vegetables actually removes the damaged gene that allows uncontrollable cell growth and lets the remaining healthy genes to continue their job of keeping cells healthy and protect them from cancer.  The bottom line is this - cruciferous vegetables help stop the chain of events that stimulate uncontrollable cell division!

With cancer being the second leading cause of death in the United States, doesn’t it make sense to be sure to include more of these wondrous vegetables in our diet to reduce the risk of getting cancer or of having a reoccurrence of cancer?
