Cheap Eats

by Jody Perrecone

I often hear it is too expensive to eat healthy.  Fresh fruits and vegetables cost too much and are not in the budget.  Let’s take a closer look.  I went to the store this week and did some comparisons.  Here is what I found (all prices are per pound).

Carrots 60¢

Green beans 99¢

Sweet potatoes 79¢

Romaine Lettuce 56¢

Lentils 99¢

Oatmeal 75¢

Oranges 59¢

Watermelon 99¢

Chickpeas 99¢

Black beans 99¢

Tomatoes 99¢

Rice 99¢

Chicken (cut) $1.84

Pork Chops $3.99

Ground Beef $2.69

Bratwurst $2.39

Hot Dogs $2.99

Potato Chips $4.56

Scalloped Potatoes (box) $2.97

Frozen Pizza $3.29

Cheddar Cheese $4.29

Healthy Choice frozen dinner $3.91

Fruit Loops $3.66

All of the healthy foods in the left column are under $1.00 a pound.  People who attend the CHIP wellness program and learn how to make healthy choices discover they save on average 30% on their food bill.  Eating healthy doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

With all of us looking where we can save money these days, eating healthy whole foods is a bargain – not only in dollars, but also in our health. Want to save money?  Eat healthy!
